Catnip Bunnies

These are the bunnies I've been knitting for Cats Protection. They're small, quick to knit, ever-so-simple 2 needle affairs with only the tinsiest bit of seaming required on the ears. Perfect for using up scrappy bits of yarn, and spreading kitty happiness :) I thought I'd offer my pattern for anyone who'd also like to give them a whirl. This is the first pattern I've written up, so apologies for it being so waffly. I've included lots of photos to help you decipher what I'm talking about!

Pattern is available as a free pdf download on ravelry right here.

This pattern can be printed for your personal use, but please don't sell or copy it. Finished pieces may be sold for charity fundraising.

  8. I'm confused over bunny body. You say:

Work 32 rows as follows - k1,slip 1 repeat to end. Make sure the first knit stitch of each row is quite tight so you don't end up with a ladder at each side.
This method creates an inside-out pouch - no seaming, woo!
Is there no purl row after the k1,sl? How does this make a pouch with no seaming. Thanks a lot I volunteer with a Feral Cat Spay and Neuter org. This would be perfect to sell.

  9. i like the idea of a wreath of bunnies for easter! (without the catnip of course!) this is adorable! or even a bunny mobile! such a great idea. and i have 4 kitties! they would love this!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jane . . make the wreath with catnip and then after Easter, donate the "toys" to a local animal shelter. That way, you and the cats will all get enjoyment.

  11. To moldwarrior - there is no purl row in the body - just the k1, s1. In effect ,you're knitting "in the round" on two needles. I promise it works, even if it sounds rather strange!

    ReplyDelete
  12. To Moldwarrior: it really does work! I have just tried it because I couldn't see how it could possibly work. Just trust in Coffee and Cream's great instructions - and see what comes out!
Thank you Coffee and Cream - this is a great 'on-the'go' project and I just love making them!

  14. Hi! I love the patterns and projects you share with us! I periodically pass your information on to others and was wondering if you would mind if I included your photos as well. I just came from your flikr album, and you have beautiful pics posted! Seems you have the gift of two talents, thank you for sharing them both

  15. Gillie54, I've just found a brilliant video showing the slipstitch method which can explain it far better than I can - http://susanbanderson.blogspot.com/2008/06/flower-pacifier-clip.html
(Incidently, that's a great flower pattern and where I first learnt the double-knitting technique)

To Kyla Quinn - thank you, and feel free to use the photos as long as they're linked back to me :)

  19. I'm a new knitter, and I'm pretty confused by the k1, s1 method. Do I do that one one row or do I slip the fully knitted row onto a new needle? If I do that, I end up with my yarn at the back end of the needle. Help!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nicole - don't panic, it can seem confusing at first! You knit one stitch, slip the next stitch, knit the next stitch, slip the next...on each row. There's a great video tutorial showing what to do - http://susanbanderson.blogspot.com/2008/06/flower-pacifier-clip.html Obviously that's a different pattern, but it's exactly the same thing and will help you get the hang of it :)

  21. Thank you! This is such a cute pattern I just HAVE to knit it. My mom's cat will love it. Maybe he'll stop trying to attack/play with her legs if he has such cute toys. We didn't name him Chaos for nothing. Thanks again for the help! I can't wait to knit this!

  22. These are SO cute! My kitties would just love it! By adding a little jingle bell to this I think this bunny would be the best kitty toy out there! THANKS! Off to give it a go!

  23. I did it! thank you... I don't know if the rabbit ears are well done but they look similar to yours... jajaja... I will send you a photo if you want.

  29. Thank you SO much for this pattern, I spent the whole day making these for the cats at the animal shelter that I'm attending to tomorrow (hopefully to get a kitty of my own!). For an extra touch, I knitted the little pouch for the tail and slipped a bell inside - it works wonderfully.

I hope the cats and kitties enjoy these :) ♥ Can't wait to try out your other creations.

  30. no crochet version? sorry i don't know your name. diane :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. um... I am confused. as I was knitting the 32 rows, It didn't turn out like you said. You said it would create an inside-out pouch, but for me, it turned out like some kind of triangle-thing. What did I di wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  32. @ Animefangirl1 - I'm not sure what you've done wrong I'm afraid!

There is a good video tutorial for the double knitting technique here - http://susanbanderson.blogspot.com/2008/06/flower-pacifier-clip.html. Obviously it's not for the same pattern, but it will guide you through the process so you can have another go at the bunny :)

  33. I can't believe it. It works and I can't figure out why. I have never seen anything like this. I'm making bunnies for friends with cats and for charity. Great way to use up extra yarn.
    Still amazed....:)

  39. I cannot find this patter on this web site.

  40. In all honesty anyone can freely sell the finished piece for any reason. Even for personal profit, you can't control that and actually have no protection by stating that. You have all rights to the pattern and not letting others distribute it, but definitely no rights for what people do with the finished piece.

  45. Im a little behind
    just found this pattern
At first I was using the smaller needles but wasn't sure I was doing it right
I actually switched up to a bigger needle and yarn left overs from making tea towels and dishcloths
and right away I saw the pouch forming
Thank you so much for the pattern
I have cat rescue and am making 5o for me to give away to other fosters
and plan on making at least 100 for the Humane Society here
    Thanks again

  46. I'm sooo in love with these bunnies!

I am putting together a sort of Easter arts and crafts compilation blog post, with pictures of creative projects for spring. Would you mind if I shared one of your pictures? I will of course credit it with a link to your Ravelry pattern. I did the same thing last year if you would like a reference on how it might look: http://aliciasivert.blogspot.se/2015/03/paskpeppen-2015.html

    Thank you for the inspiration!
    Sincerely,
